Khonoma Village

Nagaland is blessed with great valleys, high mountains, meandering streams and a rich variety of flora and fauna. Each wildlife sanctuary is different from the other in terms of variety and scenic beauty. There are rare species like tigers and Hoolock Gibbons as well as a wide variety of birdlife. Nagaland is known for its beautiful Galliformes like the Blyth’s tragopan. This endangered pheasant of the state is protected by the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary. The sanctuary, spread over 30 sq. km under the Khonoma Green Village Project is a bird watcher’s delight.

Nagaland’s wildlife conservation saga started only with Khonoma. Known for their courage, valour and fighting ability in the past, the villagers of Khonoma who once fought a series of battles with the British intruders, took the cudgel to control hunting and habitat destruction for effective management of existing protected areas and protection of flora and fauna. Khonoma adopted a unique way of wildlife conservation that became a model for the region.
Khonoma lies 20 km west of Kohima with variety of wildlife and scenic beauty. The sight of the village is enchanting with beautiful terraces carved out of the hill slopes. The picturesque paddy cultivations at different elevations that surround Khonoma are a sight to behold.

Autumn and winter months are preferred for a visit to Khonoma. September to February is the best time of the year for sighting of different avian species.
