Bhubaneswari Temple

55 km from Agartala, besides the River Gomati, Tripura

Immortalized by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in his novel ‘Rajarshi’ and drama ‘Bisharjan’, the Bhubaneswari Temple is situated besides the River Gomati. Traveling just 55 km from the capital city Agartala, at Udaipur the Bhuvaneswari Temple is a rare specimen of temple architecture. Built by Maharaja Govinda Manikya in 1660-1675 A.D., it is located near the old Royal palace of Maharaja Govinda Manikya which stand in ruins today.
 
The temple perched upon  a 3 feet high elevated porch, has  a roof featuring the typical four-chaala style with stupa like crowns on the entrance and core chambers.  Adorned with floral motifs on pillars and stupas  are in itself an exquisite view. The historical significance of this temple is that it is provides the back-drop to Tagore's play and drama.
 
The people here worship a number of deities, the chief among whom includes- Lampra, Akhatra, Bikhatra, Burasa, Thumnairok, Bonirok, Sangroma, Mwtaikotor, Twima, Songram, Noksumwtai, Mailuma, Khuluma and Swkalmwtai. The Bhuvaneswari Temple as the name suggests is mainly dedicated to the workship of Goddess Bhuvaneswari which was built in the 17th century by Maharaja Govinda Manikya.
 
Whole year round the temple is open for its devotess between 7am to 5pm.If you want to stay near the temple then accommodation is not a problem Though not of very high class, you may find hotels, which may be convenient and comfortable for you. The nearest airport being situated at Agartala, you have to reach Agartala, from where you can fetch a bus or to reach the temple. If you are traveling by train, the nearest rail head is Kumarghat on N. E. Railway. It is 1475 km from Kolkata via Guwahati and 140 km from Agartala. From here you can pick a bus or taxi to reach the temple. NH 44 connects the state with many north eastern states by road. It is also connected by regular bus services with all sub-divisional towns of Tripura and even from places like- Silchar, Guwahati, Karimganj and Shillong.
