Sohra, the name of a tourist spot in Meghalaya always keeps throbbing with tourists footfall in season and out of season. Till the other day, the must see place for the tourists was the most wettest place on the planet. Previously known as Cherapunji, the enchanting sub division in the East Khasi hills district is a paradise on the earth if one goes by the gurgling water falls along with other natural beauty and bounty.

Literally “Cherra” or “Sohrarim” stood for original “Cherra” village. Those from the Scotland who stayed there before the Independence called “Sohra”. These people from the West declared Sohra as the capital of Assam in 1832. But boxed by circumstances they shifted the capital to Shillong.

Situated at 56 kms away from the capital city of Shillong Sohra is an unavoidable spot for the tourists from the country and abroad who feel the real beauty and wonder of the nature. Tourists on the abode of cloud have taxi and sumo services from the Scotland of the East to visit the eco friendly place in all seasons. The journey to Sohra is no less wonderful with the zig zag road in the mist of blue hills surrounded by the clouds that flutters at any time. The landscape takes a different backdrop on the way to the place of interest where the tourists take delight to discover the summer monsoons. What is the secret? Its nothing but the annual meterologicai phenomena under the direct impact of the north east winds and south west monsoon. That’s the monsoon magic that makes Sohra a bio-diverse vegetations on the earth. Arriving Sohra is, indeed, an exploration of the beautiful corner of the north east Indian region.

Meghalaya has four seasons unlike Assam and other north eastern states. Spring falls in March and April while monsoon strikes the hills state from May to September. October to November is the period for autumn season while a pinching winter season falls from December to February.

Mercury starts rising just from the third week of May and it continues till the September-end where the average rainfall is 12,000 mm.
