Five people died from Assam died when an overloaded vehicle carrying them hit an electric post in Meghalaya sending shockwaves in both the north eastern states on Monday.
The tragic mishap took place at around 11 in the morning when the passengers from Mancachar district where on their way to Tura. Suddenly, the driver lost control over his vehicle before it hit the post as they reached Agillanggre. Five passengers died on the spot while three others are battling for life at the hospital.
Talking to Shillong Portal, eyewitnesses said they came to see the three wheeler bearing registration No ML08 C 9872 hit an electric post before turning turtle a couple thrice downwards. The mangled vehicle halted only at a concrete wall.
Local residents in large number thronged the spot and extricated the five bodies which include three men a child and a woman. Thirteen others who sustained injury were rushed to the hospital.
“The vehicle had 15 passengers which was overloaded. There were three men and eight women, while four of them were minors- two boys and two girls,” said Romeng Marak who came to see the mishap.
Dorik Marak, a homeguard said, “the rescue operation immediately started as SDRF and homeguards were cleaning the compound of their office just near the accident spot.”
Tura police later confirmed the death of five passengers who were identified as Salima Khatun, Sajeda Begum, Saher Ali, Abdullah Hussain and Kunsun Begam. All of them hailed from Bengarbhita, Kalapani under Mankachar PS in South Salmara in Assam.
The critically injured include Ayub Hussain, Saidur Islam , Sahiul Islam , Jahanora Khatun, Alimuddin Sheikh, Asaf Ali , Sahima Begum, Mazima Bibi and Moifful Begum.
