NEW DELHI: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma dropped a hint of resuming coal mining in the state fetching a ray of hope for thousands of people who were directly and indirectly associated with the sector.
Sangma claimed to have received a positive response from the Centre as he had a crucial meeting with coal minister Piyush Goel in New Delhi on Sunday.
Three senior cabinet colleagues also attended the meeting with the Union minister. Sangma told the minister that the state government will take care of the environment if the coal mining is allowed to resume as NGT is worried over the environmental issue associated with it.
Sources told Shillong.com that Goel listen to Sangma and his colleagues and assured him of his help since the entire subject is being monitored by the National Green Tribunal which banned the coal mining across the country a couple of years back leaving many people high and dry in the north eastern state.
The erstwhile Congress government took up the issue with the Centre. But the things refused to progress.
