Christmas in Shillong - a brief report!

You can’t just escape the festivities this time!
The Police Bazar, Kyndailad area will be the centre of celebration with a variety of programme lined up. The theme seem to be one of –'lets celebrate Christmas as One'. The business community has taken the lead in lighting up the whole of the business hub of Police Bazar, G.S Road areas . Streets, shops, lanes even sidewalks have been lighted up. The area is kept clean round the clock and new ‘use me’ bins have been put up every where. Almost every shop sports a ‘Santa’. For the December 24th night a series of programmes have been charted as open air festivities. The winners of the Campus Rock ‘Native Rules’ and ‘Colours’ are to perform in that area.

A Street Jam – touted to be the first time in Shillong is being organised in the G.S. Road with well known DJs keeping the crowd enthralled. Yet another attraction will be for the children in the form of cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck etc. who will give them company in the whole of G.S Road, Police Bazar. Food kiosks are expected to spring up, keeping in tune with the appetite of the revellers.A giant LCD screen has been put up in G.S. Road to project the Christmas celebrations to viewers, live!

On the Channel front - Sur Na Ri will celebrate Christmas with its 38th episode ‘Christmas Treat’ to be telecast through the local channel on December 24th at 8 pm, where they are expected to announce the finalists.

Earlier, various social organisations have also lent their support and cooperation in bringing the spirit of Christmas to the down trodden and deprived lot. Childline, an organisation which looks after the welfare of the poor children, organised a small celebration for needy children. In various localities, community celebrations were held. The Rilbong Sports and Cultural Club of Rilbong celebrated advance Christmas celebrations with a whole cross-sections of people from different communities joining in. They also organised a candle light procession, fun and games for children among other activities.

The Laban Presbyterian Church also celebrated pre-christmas at the A.W.Thomas Girl’s Home in Jaiaw. It was to bring in joy and hopes for the children.
The Don Bosco Past Pupils Association visited the Under-Trials in the District Jail and celebrated pre-Christmas with them in a unique gesture. Yet another gathering for Christmas celebration was from the domestic workers in Shillong. Different age groups, caste, creed became one. What mattered was just the charming spirit of Christmas. The local Dorbars came together to ensure that special cleaning drives along with white washings were taken up in most localities.

Christmas has always been a wonderfull experience in Shillong, but this time the celebrations have taken a much festive look and spirit! A celebration which Shillongites will remember for a long time!
