Nathula Pass

Once the corridor between India and Tibet is located at around 56 kms from Gangtok is an exotic place steeped in history and scenic beauty. The historic passage was closed in 1962. Located at an altitude of 14450 ft, the road to Nathula passes through the Tsomgo lake. One of the highest motorable roads in the world Nathula pass forms a part of an offshoot of the ancient Silk Road. You will be enthralled to see the road winding down the Chumbi valley surrounded by alpine trees.

On a clear day, magnificent peak of Chomolhari of Bhutan is visible from Nathula pass. You can see the international border with Chinese soldiers on the other side of the barbed wire.With the increasing steep elevation, the flora graduates from sub-tropical forest at its base. Then its moderate region passes through alpine climate and finally reaches cold tundra desert. You can avail the facility of the world's highest Automated Teller Machine placed there. Kupup located nearby is has the second highest golf course in the world. Historical Gnathang Monastery and Gnathang War Memorial is worth watching to remember the British soldiers died in war with Tibet in 1800s.You can have also a look at the Exhibition Centre of India Army there.

The Pass is open for Indian citizen on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sundays. You can visit the place by applying for permit to the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department through a registered and recognized Travel Agency. The Nathula pass with its history of glory and magnificence is sure going reflect on your mind.
