SHILLONG: In a bid to avoid an acrimonious pre poll landscape in Meghalaya, the Election Commission has banned publication of poll related advertisements in newspapers.

The country’s poll panel issued the strictures acting on the complaint from the ruling Congress alleging BJP advertisements in some local dailies allegedly defaming Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

In its order issued by the EC, the secretary said, “No political party or candidate or any other organisation or person shall publish any poll related advertisement in the print media on 26th and 27th February.”

The Commission has issued the directive to all party presidents and newspapers.
