HSPDP chief quits after MLAs join coalition

SHILLONG: HSPDP president Ardent Basaiawmoit has resigned put in his papers after two of the party legislators joined the NPP-led government defying his diktat on Tuesday.

In his letter to the party vice president Basaiawmoit said despite party decision not to rally behind the NPP led coalition government under chief ministership of Conrad Sangma, two legislators attended the swearing in ceremony and even one of them took oath as minister.

The stunning development took place a day after the party strongly opposed BJP as one of the coalition partners saying that alliance with only regional parties should be encouraged.

HSPDP won two seats in the election even after its president lost to an independent candidate by a narrow margin.
