SHILLONG: Congress legislator and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has vacated the Ampati constituency while the party is set to field his daughter in the upcoming assembly bye polls in the north eastern state.
Party leaders in Shillong on Friday confirmed that Sangma has vacated his home constituency since he was also elected from Sangsok constituency where chief minister and NPP president Conrad Sangma was to be a candidate to take on the Congress candidate.
But in a bid to corner the incumbent chief minister Congress is set to field Mukul Sangma’s daughter Miani D Shira who is believed to have agreed to contest.
Political observers call it a significant development since Ampati is said to be a Congress stronghold which elected Mukul Sangma for four consecutive terms.
The assembly by poll in Ampati is bound to pose huge challenge for chief minister Conrad Sangma who needs to be elected to the assembly within the next six months.
